Per-line advertising is designed to mislead. What matters is the total amount that hits your bank account each month. This page shows total family costs for every major carrier and leading MVNO at 2, 3, 4, and 5 lines. T-Mobile generally wins on value for families, Verizon offers the best perks at higher tiers, and AT&T sits in the middle on pricing but leads in rural coverage.

Monthly Cost by Family Size: Every Carrier Compared

Best for 2 Lines
Two-line plans are common for couples and small households. At just 2 lines, MVNOs still offer the best value because major carrier multi-line discounts have not kicked in fully.
Best Value
Visible: $50/mo total
Two separate accounts at $25 each. Verizon network. Unlimited data with 5G. No multi-line discount needed because the base price is already the lowest unlimited rate available.
Best for Seniors
T-Mobile 55+: $55/mo total
$27.50 per line for 2 lines. Must be 55 or older. Full T-Mobile Go5G features including 100GB premium data. Best senior-specific plan on any carrier.
Best Premium
T-Mobile Go5G Plus: $110/mo total
$55 per line for 2 lines. Truly unlimited premium data, Netflix included, Apple TV+ included, 15GB hotspot per line. Premium experience for couples.
Best for 3 Lines
Three lines is where major carrier multi-line discounts start becoming meaningful. T-Mobile Go5G drops to $40 per line, making it competitive with some MVNOs on a per-line basis while offering premium data priority.
Best Budget
Visible or US Mobile: $75/mo total
$25 per line, three separate accounts. Both use major networks (Verizon for Visible, choice of Verizon or T-Mobile for US Mobile). US Mobile includes 75GB premium data and 30GB hotspot per line.
Best Overall Value
T-Mobile Go5G: $120/mo total
$40 per line. 100GB premium data per line, 5GB hotspot, and T-Mobile perks. Only $15 per line more than Visible with significantly better data priority and in-store support.
Best for 5+ Lines
Larger families need carriers with aggressive multi-line scaling. T-Mobile and Cricket continue to lead at 5 lines. Flat-rate MVNOs like Visible scale linearly, which makes them less competitive as family size increases.
T-Mobile Go5G: 5 Lines at $160/mo
$32 per line. Premium T-Mobile experience with 100GB premium data per line. Netflix included on Go5G Plus tier ($220 per month for 5 lines). Best combination of features and price at 5 lines among major carriers.
Cricket Unlimited: 5 Lines at $160/mo
$32 per line. Uncapped speeds on the AT&T network. Physical stores for support. Simple pricing structure. Best option for families that want AT&T network coverage at budget pricing.
Why T-Mobile Usually Wins for Families
T-Mobile consistently offers the best multi-line value among major carriers. At 4 lines, T-Mobile Go5G costs $140 per month with 100GB of premium data per line. The equivalent Verizon Plus plan costs $180, and AT&T Unlimited Premium costs $204. That is $40 to $64 per month more for a similar experience.
T-Mobile also bundles better perks at family tiers: Netflix Standard is included free on Go5G Plus with 2 or more lines, saving families $15.49 per month. Apple TV+ is included as well. The combination of competitive pricing, strong 5G performance, and bundled streaming makes T-Mobile the default recommendation for most families of 3 or more.
The exceptions: choose Verizon if you need the most consistent urban reliability or are in an area where Verizon significantly outperforms T-Mobile. Choose AT&T if you are in a rural area where AT&T coverage is meaningfully better than T-Mobile. Use our plan finder to match your specific priorities to the right carrier.
Should Your Family Use an MVNO?
For families of 4, the MVNO cost advantage narrows significantly. T-Mobile Go5G at $140 per month for 4 lines ($35 per line) is only $10 per line more than Visible at $25 per line ($100 total). For that extra $40 per month, you get: 100GB premium data per line, physical stores for support, device financing, and streaming perks. The value proposition of MVNOs is strongest for single lines and weakest for large families.
The exception is when budget is the absolute top priority. Visible at $100 per month for 4 unlimited lines, or US Mobile at $100 per month with 75GB premium data per line, still saves $40 per month compared to T-Mobile Go5G. That is $480 per year. For families where every dollar counts, that savings is meaningful.
